I’ve heard that confidence is like a muscle – you have to keep exercising it so it can grow strong.
It seems easy enough, but the challenge that many people face, including myself, is actually doing the work to get there.
Unlike building a physical muscle, gaining confidence focuses entirely on mental exercise.
Now, this can be tricky because we already have a set perspective, that is, certain ways of doing or seeing things. Changing these internal habits takes patience, time, and reflection.
However, confidence really is a skill that we can develop through practicing certain mindset techniques.
Ultimately, anyone can do it and no one can stop you – except for yourself!
So, let’s push past those internal fears or hesitations and discover how to be confident about your body.
First off, let me ask you a question…
Why Is Confidence Important?
Yes, you clicked on this article for a reason! So, you know confidence is an important element in living a happy and fulfilling life!
But, can you tell me why that is?
You probably just know that confidence is important but could not really sum up why! That’s because growing up, most of us were told to be confident against the challenges we faced or could face – like bullying.
But, confidence is more than just a reaction to something negative! Being confident can change you entirely for the better!
Being confident allows you to…
- Believe in yourself: it calms the voice inside you that says, “I can’t do it.”
- Be happier: it gives you a greater sense of purpose and brings out your authentic self.
- Be free of doubt: you no longer doubt yourself or your abilities because you know what you can handle.
- Build more meaningful connections: you become less focused on yourself and will be able to genuinely communicate and relate to others.
- Become stronger: you will know you can handle obstacles and not be crippled by them.
- Be more motivated: you will be more likely to start projects instead of pondering about them for a while.
- Be less stressed: you will have to worry less about yourself and other mental tortures.
These all sound incredible, right? Well, you can be just like this as long as you take these tips and integrate them into your daily life.
Let’s get into it.
How To Get Body Confidence!
realize you are your own worst critic
How do you talk to yourself?
The self-talk you use as a major impact on your self confidence. Unfortunately, we all have moments where we think negatively about ourselves.
The key to being a confident person is catching ourselves whenever we have those moments and then replacing them with positive thoughts.
For example, if you find yourself criticizing your body, remind yourself about the parts of yourself you like and you find beautiful. This will weaken those harmful thoughts so all you think about yourself are encouraging thoughts.
This will build your self confidence and allow you to be happier with your body because you will no longer be doubting yourself.
Tell People How to Treat You
Maybe your lack of body confidence stems from one person who always makes comments about your body. Like your aunt every Thanksgiving who mentions your weight.
It’s not okay. And you need to put an end to it.
You cannot simply wait for the comments to stop. Telling someone their comments are unwelcome or hurtful will make a big difference in how you perceive yourself.
It can be scary especially if you don’t like confrontation. But, it’s important to recognize that telling them will stop the comments, embarrassment, and pain.
If this is the push you need: be strong and do it!
SWitch Up Your Wardrobe
Sometimes, all we need is to change things up to get a fresh perspective.
Purchasing some pieces of clothing that you really like, will in turn make you feel more confident when you wear it.
But, you don’t even have to spend money. Maybe wear something that you haven’t worn in a while or try spicing up your appearance by making more bold outfit choices.
If you don’t want to change up your style entirely you can change the colours you wear or focus on enhancing a part of your body you like the most.
While doing this, it is important that you step out of your comfort zone a little bit – don’t overdo it or you will end up feeling insecure! Take things slow and know what you are okay with doing.
You will discover that you’ll walk with your head up and feel more like yourself!
Never underestimate the importance of a good pamper session!
Treating yourself every now and then is so important because it makes us feel amazing! When we feel good, it also transforms how we think about ourselves!
Here’s a list of things you can do to feel incredible and boost your confidence:
These activities don’t seem like they would be related to increased body confidence.
However, all of them involve taking care of ourselves in a way that directly contributes to our happiness and how we feel about ourselves.
improve how you present yourself!
- What’s your posture like?
- Are you fidgeting by twirling your hair or tapping your feet?
- Are you swaying side to side or are your feet planted firmly on the ground?
- How are you breathing?
- Do you maintain eye contact?
Body language is directly linked to your self confidence! Improving how you present yourself will make you feel more secure and comfortable with your body.
The actions I mentioned above are directly correlated to lack of self esteem and comfort in the social situation and yourself.
How we feel transfers into our physical appearance and can indicate to others exactly how you feel, whether that is shy, insecure, uncertain, and more.
An easy way to be confident in your body is to mirror the body language of others around you!
For example, you can naturally copy the mannerisms or facial expressions of people so that you feel more at ease with yourself.
This will also stop you from focusing on how you look and will show others that you are perfectly composed.
Recognize all the amazing things you do and everything you love about yourself. Lack of body confidence stems from low-self esteem.
So, in order to combat this, you need to highlight all the good things about you so your self-esteem will increase! This requires you to realize that beauty is more than skin-deep.
Ultimately, you need to count your blessings for what you have!
It’s easy! When you wake up in the morning, think about 2 things you love about yourself and 1 physical feature you are feeling particularly confident about.
Starting your day with this positivity and kindness towards yourself will make a big difference in how you carry yourself throughout the day.
Stop Comparing Yourself To Others
One of the greatest things you can do in general is to stop comparing yourself to others.
It’s so important that we remember no two bodies are the same! Comparing yourself to an Instagram influencer or celebrity only breeds negative and toxic thinking.
Here are some techniques you can use to stop comparing yourself to others:
- Clean out your digital close by restricting who you follow on Instagram to mainly your friends. This way, your feed is not clouded by people who fit societal perceptions of “beautiful”. This is a good beginner step to avoid comparison altogether and take away toxic mentalities that lower your self-esteem. Just limit your exposure to it and stop torturing yourself!
- Remember that what is on the inside matters most. Comparing your body to someone else’s body takes away the most special and unique aspect of humans: our personality and insides. Learn to radiate from the inside and it will show on the outside.
Tell your friends about it!
Your friends should be the type of people that make you feel happy, comforted and loved!
By surrounding yourself with people like this, you are one step closer to being sure of yourself.
So, update your friends and telling them what you’re going through. Let them in on what you are working towards and they will be your biggest motivator and supporter.
It feels good to have someone in your life that checks in on your progress and cares about how you are doing!
Plus, it feels even better to open up on this topic that many people internalize.
Remember – don’t feel vulnerable or pressured to talk about how you want more confident. Your friends may be able to share their advice and stories too!
I hope you learned how to feel confident about your body!
