Are you looking for new ways to get involved during school?
Maybe there aren’t any clubs that really stand out and interest you!
Don’t assume that you have to waste away your free time watching Netflix (which is great every now and then), when you can spend your time being more productive and possibly even earning money.
Imagine what a little bit of extra income could do for you each month… you could pay off your tuition loans, buy those expensive textbooks, or simply start saving for your future.
Starting a blog does require a bit of work at first, but I promise that it really doesn’t have to be difficult.
If you have ever wanted to start a blog and build an online presence, you have come to the right place. I am going to share my top 5 reasons why you should start a blog in university, college, or even high school.
What are the Benefits of Starting a Blog
There are probably hundreds of great reasons why you should start a blog, but I have narrowed it down to my top 5. Here we go!
1: Build Your Brand and Create an Online Presence
The first reason is definitely one of my favourites. From boosting your resume to growing your network, a blog allows you develop your online brand and presence.
Typically, what I would recommend to someone who wants to start a blog is to choose a niche that they are most passionate about.
You may be an expert in something completely different than what you are passionate about, and that is completely okay!
The passion you have will fuel your drive and allow you to eventually become an expert in any niche. It will also make writing content much easier in the long-run.
So, why does the niche relate to growing your brand?
Well, the answer is simple. Once you start doing more research and writing about your brand, you can try reaching out to professionals in that industry or subject area.
Maybe they’ll allow you to give them an interview, or perhaps they might want to learn more about you.
This is a great way to meet new people and all it takes is for you to start writing.
But, it doesn’t end there!
Having a blog, even a personal one, is a great booster on your resume, scholarship applications, and job interviews.
It allows you to display your work, share your thoughts and opinions, and let the world know more about you.
Personally, I have found it to be applicable in almost every competitive situation.
2: Generate an Income With a Blog
Did you think that blogging was only a hobby to spend your free time working on?
Think again! With a little bit of luck and a lot of hard work, you can earn an endless amount of money with your blog.
While this should NOT be the sole reason you start a blog, it sure is a benefit that could enhance your life dramatically.
So, how can you actually make money through a blog?
Some of the most popular ways include affiliate marketing, advertising, or selling your own content.
Affiliate marketing is essentially mentioning other products or services in your blog, and earning a commission when one of your readers subscribes to that service or purchases that product.
Advertising is as simple as it sounds, really! Once you start earning consistent traffic, you can get paid to have advertisements displayed across your website. Some programs will pay you per impression, and others will pay you per click.
There actually are people out there that earn a full time income through their blog. Don’t get the wrong message though, these bloggers have spent years working away at their craft.
Another big plus about using a blog to generate an income is that there are very little start up costs. All you have to pay for is a domain and website host.
One platform that provides you with these services, along with step-by-step training videos, live chat, 24/7 support, keyword research, live events, and a community of over 1 million (yes, MILLION) members, is Wealthy Affiliate!

3: Learn New Skills Through Your Blog
There are hundreds of skills that you can develop by starting a blog. Most of them are developed without even thinking about it.
The great part about blogging is that it teaches you so much, but in a way that is fun and at your own pace.
When you learn these skills, you don’t have to take a test or exam at the end either. This allows you to focus on your academic career and work on your blog when you have the free time.
Let’s talk about some of the key skills that you’ll be forced to learn!
- Designing a Fully Functional WordPress Website
- Writing and Communication
- Website Traffic Strategies
- Search Engine Optimization (SEO)
- Google Analytics
- Google AdSense
- Affiliate Marketing
- Email Marketing
- Graphic Design
- Keyword Research
- Social Media Marketing (Pinterest, Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, etc.)
- Content Management
- Website Hosting
- HTML and CSS
Wow! When you stop and think about it, there are an endless amount of new skills to be learned through blogging. It will also change your perspective on the internet itself.
4: Use Your Blog as Creative Outlet
Not only will your writing be improved while blogging, so will your mental health.
Many people use their blogs as a creative outlet – a platform to express their thoughts, feelings, and opinions about the world around them.
If you think you’re more of an introverted person, a blog can be the perfect way to have your voice heard.
You choose what to write about, you decide how to design it, and you pick how much time to spend on it. Pretty big confidence booster if you ask me!
Blogging allows your creativity to expand, along with your ambitions and passions. It is a channel that provides an escape from your everyday life to express yourself.
You’ll be able to organize your thoughts, learn more about yourself, and reflect on your experiences.
If you are starting a blog while in school, it will become a great place to look back on and remember when you’re older.
5: Inspire, Help, and Motivate Others
Last but not least, blogging allows you to inspire, help, and motivate others. This is one of my favourite reasons to blog, and the most fulfilling and rewarding.
When you become an expert in your niche, you are teaching others and providing them with new knowledge.
There is no better feeling than knowing you are providing value to someone else, especially for free.
In fact, the goal of our blog is to not only create opportunities for ourselves, but also to inspire other students and motivate them to follow their passions and dreams.
Perhaps you have close ties to a particular charity or volunteer association. When your blog begins to grow and traffic is building, you can leverage that online community by promoting your cause.
A great way to consistently improve on this is by asking for feedback. Your friends and family are a great resource for doing this.
Ask them what they like about your blog, but more importantly, what they are interested in reading about.
This is the perfect opportunity to write an article about their idea and help them out.
By making everyone’s lives around you easier, I promise that you will feel better about yourself as well.
