Ultimate Netflix for Students Guide

Netflix for Students

Finding and maintaining a balance between school and leisure is especially important for students.

Although not emphasized too much in today’s fast-paced society, focusing too much on school to the point where you are depriving yourself of enjoyment is detrimental.

Everyone needs some form of relaxation and pleasure!

Introducing Netflix. Or more specifically, our Ultimate Netflix for Students Guide.

Exhausted after spending three hours trying to solve Calculus homework or writing a long English essay?

Open a new tab on your computer or switch on your TV and get ready to take that much needed break that you deserve. It is convenient, easy, and is sure to provide you with the enjoyment that school work eliminates.

The hardest part may just be finding a perfect TV show that provides you with the most enjoyable 30 to 40 minute break. Netflix has so many options and genres that it may seem impossible to narrow it down to just one show.

Well, we have got you covered. Here is a list of our fifteen favourite shows that are sure to provide you with some enjoyment during those well needed study breaks.

Just be careful, some of these shows are binge-worthy. They’ll even motivate you to complete your work faster. Without further ado, here we go…

1: Friends

Must. Watch. Not only is this one of the most funny, iconic, and entertaining shows of all time, it is absolutely perfect for students!

Each episode is only twenty minutes long so it is just right if you want to take a short break at any point of the day to just relax and separate yourself from your hectic schedule for a little bit.

Plus, the series is extremely lighthearted and does not require you to pay attention to detail for future episodes, so you don’t need to worry about keeping up with it!

Turn it on and enjoy whenever you want a laugh or two. Trust us, you won’t be disappointed with this series! It’s an all time favourite.

2: Money Heist

This one will keep the wheels turning in your brain but in a fun, mysterious, and exciting way.

This three season show focuses on a group of criminals who organize a heist and how they attempt to get away with it.

Plot twist though: you will find yourself supporting these criminals instead of being against. Yes, you read that right!

You are bound to be surprised, thrilled, scared, and nervous throughout the show as it’s literally one big puzzle. It’s definitely going to keep you entertained and intrigued!

It’s also easy to follow and keep up with over the school year so you won’t have to worry about remembering and keeping track of the plot information.

3: The End of The F***ing World

The title says it all. Looking for something mysterious, different, and strange, but also extremely addictive and entertaining at the same time?

Then you have the show for you! The End of The F***ing World takes you on a journey through the mind of a teenage boy and his encounter with a girl he meets who both feel different and separated from society.

Throughout his journey, you’ll quickly learn that this psychopath boy may have other intentions rather than simply finding his soulmate.

The episodes are short, the plot is unpredictable, and the characters will make you laugh! You may find that the first few episodes seem a bit weird, but once you get used to it, you’ll be drawn in for good!

4: When They See Us

Oh my! This four part, based on a true story docu-series takes place in 1989, where a jogger was assaulted and raped in New York’s Central Park, and five young people are wrongly charged with the crime.

They were labeled as the Central Park Five group.

The incredible acting will shock you as you get an inside look at how the lives of these young, innocent boys are turned upside down by spending years in prison, hoping to get exonerated.

When They See Us will likely bring you to tears as your emotions explode and your heart breaks for the group of young boys.

5: Shameless

Ah, there’s nothing quite like keeping up with a heavily dysfunctional but lovable family. This drama show focuses on the Gallagher family of six children and how they attempt to stay afloat with an alcoholic father.

Shameless is hilarious, nerve-wrecking, crazy and most of all: emotional!

You will definitely feel all the emotions and fall in love with all the characters and their stories despite all the mishaps they go through.

It’s also perfect to watch as a student because it is easy to follow and each episode has mini recaps of what happened on the previous episode.

6: Thirteen Reasons Why

Yes, this is a relatively mainstream show but trust us, Thirteen Reasons Why is not your typical teenage series. The show is relatable and empowering for all students.

This three season show takes you through the causes and aftermath of the suicide of a teenage girl, Hannah Baker.

Addressing issues such as bullying, sexual assault, and isolation, it is very compelling from beginning to end.

In our opinion, all students should watch this show to remind themselves of the support that surrounds them, even when they might feel alone!

7: You

What would this list be without a good ol’ psychological thriller? Except this series is much better and more mysterious than your typical thriller!

This two season show follows the perspective of a bookstore manager whose crush on a female writer turns into a daunting obsession to acquire her love.

Using every resource to his advantage, he goes above and beyond to accomplish this goal – even committing atrocities along the way.

This show is beyond riveting and will surely have you at the edge of your seat the entire time.

Plus, following the perspective of a stalker is the perfect way to spend your free time right?

8: The Fosters

This isn’t your typical American drama series. The Fosters follows the lives of Stef and Lena Foster, a lesbian couple who struggle to cope with raising one biological and four adopted children in San Diego, California.

While this might sound like a pretty boring series, the different personalities and backgrounds of having a blended family creates an intriguing and entertaining situation.

For anyone that is interested in the adoption process, this show is for you!

9: Mindhunter

Another crime thriller show for all you crime fanatics! This underrated show follows the perspective of two FBI agents as they investigate crimes and the motives and psyches of serial killers in order to catch them.

What’s unique about Mindhunter is that sets it apart from other crime shows is that it takes place in the 1970’s.

So, you get a glimpse of past techniques used to solve a crime and also see the development of modern serial-killer profiling.

If you are interested in real life crimes as well, this show covers the interviews and investigations of American serial killers such as Dennis Radar and Ed Kemper!

This show is extremely captivating and is perfect to sink your teeth into after a long day of work. Plus, it will keep the wheels in your brain turning as you piece together clues to determine the mystery of who committed the crime and why.

10: This is Us

Grab your tissue box (or a few)! We promise that after just the first episode, this dramedy style show will bring you to tears, warm your heart, and keep your eyes glued to the television.

This is Us reveals how even the smallest events in our lives can have a much larger impact on the type of person we become, and the people we’re surrounded with.

It follows the lives of Kevin, Kate, and Randall (nicknamed The Big Three), and their parents Jack and Rebecca who overcome incredible obstacles and teach the value of family, love, and support!

11: Black Mirror

Looking for something really different from your typical drama or action show? Well, look no further!

Black Mirror is a fictional dystopian show that covers the personal lives of individuals and how modern day activities, beliefs and behaviours influence them in a detrimental way.

Each episode is its own and separate from the rest, so all you have to do is pick whichever episode you are most intrigued by and turn it on.

It’s literally like watching a mini movie, so you are bound to be satisfied as you get all the mystery, action, excitement as well as an ending…no more watching seasons and seasons of a show to get an ending!

My favourite episodes of Black Mirror that you can switch on whenever you are bored or need a break are: White Bear, Be Right Back, Nosedive, and San Junipero. But all the episodes are captivating and unique!

12: Grey’s Anatomy

I don’t mean to be cliché, but everyone should watch at least a couple episodes of this drama and romance show!

This multi-season series will keep you having something to watch for a while, so if you are looking for a long-term show to dive into, Grey’s Anatomy is perfect for you!

Grey’s Anatomy follows the life and struggles of Meredith Grey as she balances her stressful career as a surgeon and her complicated love life. But it’s more than just that!

You will be shocked and moved to tears by the harrowing stories of patients that come into the hospital and moved by the characters and relationships.

This drama encompasses all topics and all the feels, so it’s perfect for all audiences.

Don’t deny the hype, just give it a shot!

13: The Walking Dead

When humanity falls, a zombie apocalypse takes over. This horror-themed television show follows a former police officer, Rick Grimes, as he tries to lead a group of survivors for as long he can.

However, when humanity is threatened, nobody is safe. Not from each other, or from the zombie attacks.

And if you get bit or die, you become one of them!

Sound thrilling? With over 10 seasons on air, I promise that The Walking Dead will leave you on the edge of your seat!

Fun Fact: the show is actually based on a best-selling comic book series by Robert Kirkman, Tony Moore, and Charlie Adlard.

14: Brooklyn Nine-Nine

Another one of our favourite comedy shows, Brooklyn Nine-Nine is currently airing their seventh season, proving that it’s a hit.

When a new commanding officer is appointed to a New York police precinct, the team is shaken up and tries to have a ton of fun while on the job.

Conflicting personalities, poor flirting, and hilarious battle scenes will leave you laughing until your cheeks hurt!

15: Suits

When a smart, but unqualified college dropout is hired by one of the best legal firms in New York, the stakes to close cases and maintain his secret are high.

Not only is this TV drama exciting, it is also extremely funny and interesting. You are bound to learn a thing or two about law, love, and friendships, while also having a good laugh!

Did you know that one of the characters from this show is now the Duchess of Sussex? That’s right, Meghan Markle is one of the main characters in Suits.

Our Decision!

We had an extremely difficult time narrowing our list down to only fifteen shows, but we did it! Hopefully our list will inspire you to start watching a new series and gain a new perspective on the world.

We also tried to stay away from focusing on only a few subjects and genres, and instead included shows for all interests and tastes.

Remember that this list is in NO specific order!

Hopefully these shows will allow you to take a break from all the work during your semester at school!

This article also provides some other stress relieving activities that you could benefit from.

Do you know of a great Netflix series that we didn’t mention?

  1. Rightly said.

I don’t think it’s a good idea to refrain from any form of entertainment during the school year. Now that might sound counterproductive, but from my experience, it isn’t. It does a whole lot of good to take a short break from studying once in a while. Your recommendations are actually what I personally indulge in when I feel like taking a much deserved break. I love money heist, the show is awesome. Filled with suspense every step of the way. That is my ideal show. Then the Harvey and Mike show, phew, arguably the most engaging show ever.

  7. Thanks for sharing this Ultimate Neflix for Students guide. I totally agree with you; we must have heard of this saying: too much work and no play makes Jack a full boy. We really need to enjoy ourselves even as students. I find it difficult to watch movies especially while I am alone so it would be a great idea to watch with a friend. These movies you have shared must be very interesting so I need to check out one of them. I have heard of The Walking Dead and I have watched a lil part of Grey’s Anatomy.
